The Gridiron Gentlemen Super Fun Predictions League: Week 5

We are unfortunately past the quarter way point in the season (time flies eh’). A fairly straight forward week in terms of results in week 4, but it did mean a change at the top of the Gents table.

Here’s the current score:

Dan: 40-23

James: 38-25

Dylan: 37-26

Simon: 42-21

Duncan: 40-23

Alex: 21-10

So let’s look at what we’ve got in store for week 5, starting with a fun Thursday night game.

Indianapolis Colts @ Houston Texans

A fun game was had on Thursday this week, made more fun by some correct predictions, even with Matt Hasselbeck struggling with a sickness that kept him on an IV all week.

Buffalo Bills @ Tennessee Titans

The Bills may have been exposed last week by a masterful game plan from the Giants. The biggest issue however is can the Bills stop shooting themselves in the foot with penalties in typical Rex Ryan style.

Cleveland Browns @ Baltimore Ravens

If you asked me the result of this game before the start of the season, it would be heavily weighted to the Ravens. Now we have 2 closely matched teams. The Ravens have few healthy weapons, but Justin Forsett seems to have hit his stride. the Browns have weapons but they, once again, can’t stop the run. This could be a fun game.

Chicago Bears @ Kansas City Chiefs

The Bears won last week! The Chiefs have faced an endless stream of unbeaten teams. Let’s just say it seems unlikely that the Bears use last weeks momentum to build on and get a result here.

Seattle Seahawks @ Cincinnati Bengals

Game of the week here! Seattle seem to be building momentum, but have shown some obvious flaws. The Bengals have been blowing teams out for the last 4 weeks, but have a history of laying an egg in the big games. This is a great test for the Bengals.

St Louis Rams @ Green Bay Packers

Green Bay are probably the best team in the league right now (questionably). The Rams have been giant killers so far this season, beating division rivals, the Seahawks and Cardinals. This could very well be where the giant killing stops…

Jacksonville Jaguars @ Tampa Bay Buccaneers

2 ‘not-so-great’ teams that could see a decent game. Both QB’s seem to be improving from a poor show at the start of the season. Both teams also have better defences than expected. So this could be fun… or a dumpster fire. Either way it’ll be entertaining.

New Orleans Saints @ Philadelphia Eagles

Neither team has hit any kind of form, but both teams seem to have flashed glimpses of something serviceable. The Saints last week looked pretty good, with Brees hitting some form. The Eagles need to keep the defence off the field otherwise they’ll struggle. This will almost certainly be a game where we learn absolutely nothing about either team.

Washington @ Atlanta Falcons

Both teams are exceeding expectation, but are still at very different levels. If Washington can run the ball and get ahead in games, they can win them. They are however up against a Falcons team with a ton of talent on both sides of the ball. This could just be a little too much for Washington.

Arizona Cardinals @ Detroit Lions

Poor Detroit. They cannot catch a break. Arizona played a decent game against St Louis, but couldn’t get the result, they’ll be smarting. Detroit lost a close game, to a dodgy decision against the Seahawks last week. These 2 teams are at a totally different level. The Lions will surely struggle against a team that has the best points differential in the league.

New England Patriots @ Dallas Cowboys

Dallas are missing some key pieces again this week and there really couldn’t be a worse team to face in this situation. New England come out of a bye week with a perfect record, playing near perfect football. The Cowboys have done surprisingly well considering the lack of weapons and they get Rolando McClain and Greg Hardy back, it just might be a little much to expect the Cowboys to get the result.

Denver Broncos @ Oakland Raiders

Fun game here. If the Broncos can stifle the Raiders offence, who have been on fire in the last couple of weeks, they should be able to do enough to eek out a result. If the Raiders can keep Carr upright and run up the score, they stand a chance of handing Denver their first loss.

San Francisco 49ers @ New York Giants

San Francisco seem to be hitting a lot of teams in their stride. Kaepernick has looked a mess over the last couple of weeks, missing reads, not going through his progressions and being overly skittish. He has lost his offence. New York have been crafting master plans to beat teams, but this could be a case of overconfidence. The Niners do have pieces and could take advantage of a Giants team that may have looked past a wounded San Francisco team.

Pittsburgh Steelers @ San Diego Chargers

The Steelers have crazy amounts of talent on the offence, but unfortunately not at QB. The Chargers have seemed to be in a constant stream of close games. The Chargers will certainly struggle against the run game, but having a weapon like Gates back does mean they could run up the score. This could be a high scoring, close match-up.
